Dalmau's formal training is in fine art which he studied in the u.s. and europe. Louis a surrealist at heart, has always been inspired by his surroundings. His surrealism grew not only on his canvas but transformed itself to display in a totally surrealistic environment, underwater. In 1988 dalmau created the world's first underwater art gallery, dalmau's artificial reef. This truly surrealistic endeavor was immediately recognized as a work of art, not only for it's artistic value but for it's contribution to the environment.

This beautifully massive combination of paintings and sculpture would also serve as an artificial reef , enhancing the quality of the water as well as becoming a thriving marine community.  Scuba divers and art enthusiasts were given a surrealistic playground as well as an environmental fantasy, the merger of art and nature. "i created artwork which is what i do, now in it's new home another artist, nature, will collaborate in the metamorphosis of this ongoing exhibit. The colors and texture will come alive as corals, algae and filter feeders grow on the original work."  (louis dalmau)

An artist's dream, his brush and nature worked together to give us an underwater art gallery. Thirty-five tons of rough, culvert pipes were turned into the artist's canvas creating an artistic fantasy under the water's surface along with five concrete sculptured ballerinas that will swim throughout time. In 1988 dalmau a newcomer to the south florida art scene was given an  incomparable acknowledgment by  south florida magazine. Dalmau was named best in  the category of art in the 88 for 88 issue. This tribute was dedicated to 88 outstanding achievers  in five categories that year. The city of miami beach also honored louis with the key to the city for his unparalleled artwork. Recognition of dalmau's work gained vast media coverage. Soon to follow were television appearances, newspaper and magazine coverage and countless radio interviews. Dalmau's work was on display in major galleries as well as in public places.

The 90's gave birth to dozens of new successions and periods in dalmau's work. His work continued displaying in galleries and high in demand. However a new era was coming about in the art world, that of technology. New and sophisticated creations  were  making an  induction. A bizarre and scary form of art became visible, one called digital. Louis found this concept not only insulting but frightening, a machine was replacing the brush and  the canvas had transformed into a screen. After months of denial that this artistic movement was real, louis surrendered and bought his first electronic art materials, a computer and art software. Experimenting with these amazing tools opened the doors to a whole new world. Skepticism soon became a belief that nothing could stand in the way of the imagination. Louis an art teacher at the time found himself back in the classroom re-learning technique. Dozens of works were conceived during this transition. Dalmau was now obsessed with the merger of art and technology. This passion hungered to learn more and more making louis proficient  in the leading software available to create artwork for print and the web such as: adobe photoshop, pagemaker, illustrator,  quarck express, flash, front page,  corel and many many more. During this period dalmau's work was also honored. In 1996 pope john paul bestowed the apostolic blessing upon louis for his contribution to christian art  which homes at vatican city. In 1997 corel privileged louis with an award in their world wide competition.
